Romi Mayes - Sweet Something Steady There is an unbridgeable gulf between the slick, sugary, cliché-ridden, way-to-clever Nashville-certified, country-pop of Faith Hill and Shania Twain and the stripped-down gritty truth of acts like Romi Mayes. None of that New County crap here. This is country that is steeped in tradition but does not let that legacy weight it down. It's real and it's delicious. Romi proves that you don't have to be from Tennessee to understand life's bumps and bruises. Check out the mournful and weary "Eight More Days" or the bluesy and brash "The Other Dame". This has to be one of the year's very best discs regardless of it's country or roots tag you owe it to yourself to give this disc a spin. (www.romimayes.com)
